A Poem About You
Do you know what it means to be you?
Should I give you a clue?
Of what an incredible miracle to be you,
The person I’m talking to.
We can go a thousand years backwards,
And a thousand forward.
We can search all the times and places,
And there won’t be another you.
You’re crafted with the same materials,
As everybody else.
You didn’t come from the blue,
And yet, you’re new.
It’s long overdue to realize the significance,
Of just being you.
Let’s take some more bites to chew,
And walk this through.
There are billions from Poland to Peru,
Speaking in Mandarin and Zulu.
But how many of them are like you?
The answer is none, zero.
You may find people who has your looks,
But they’re never you.
Because you are not just the physical form,
You’re so much more.
You are your stories, memories, and beliefs,
The things in your view.
You are your thoughts, ambitions, and ideas,
The dreams you pursue.
You are your parents, grandparents, and great grandparents,
The ancestors you never knew.
The chemical elements that make up the stars in the sky,
You are all of that, too.
I know you’re also traveling with some baggage,
The shit you been through.
The crushing weight of pain, trauma, and grief,
Some heartbreaks, too.
Losses to recover from, rough times of regrets,
And wounds to attend to.
I don’t know how one can carry all of that,
But I see you.
You keep getting up after being knocked down,
You never withdrew.
And you keep adding colors to people’s lives,
Even when you’re blue.
All the experiences that were lived by you,
Just for one, never two.
That made the distinctive individual,
That I’m simply calling: You.
That’s your cue to start appreciating you,
To be true to you.
Don’t put yourself at the back of the queue,
For your time is due.
Find your family, your tribe, your crew,
Stick to them like glue.
Learn from the old and embrace the new,
That’s how we grow.
Do you know what it means to be you?
Did you get the clue?
Next time somebody comes your ways,
You let them know who.
You’re all what’s been said and done,
And you are me, too.
It’s no coincidence that the word us,
Starts with you.
